"Scary Fairy Tales"
Dear Blissers,
Long time no see! This is Vivian. It's my pleasure to host the meeting this Saturday (July 19). This time I'm returning to my major, Children's Literature.
You must have read or listened to some fairy tales when you were little. Even now you may tell fairy tlaes to children around you. But has it ever occurred to you that fairy tales can be very cruel and violent? I'd like to intorduce the scariest three fairy tales on my list to you, including Bluebeard (by Charles Parrault), The Red Shoes (by Hans Christian Andersen) and The Jupiter Tree (by Brothers Grimm).
We'll examine the stories and the styles of the authors carefully to discover the magical elements and hidden messages of fairy tales. Meanwhile, we'll try to answer the following questions : Are fairy tales for children? What is children's literature? What kind of world/moral are we preparing children to enter?
I'll prepare the texts for us to read together in the meeting. The only preparation you need to make is to think of the fairy tale that impressed you most deeply when you were little. Thank you and welcome.
