Dear Blissers,
For the recent outbreak of COVID-19, hopefully we not only learn a lot of lessons from firsthand experience but also try to look back on the historical measures in face of infectious decease from our prestigious Blisser, Uncle Ting this Saturday on July 11, 2020!
For self-growth and in-depth discussion, please read the attachments before the meeting. Welcome and Enjoy with us!
Here is the introduction by Uncle Ting,
I assume that you are now enjoying the Dragon Boat Festival holiday. There are many traditions such as eating zongzi(棕子),racing dragon boat, drinking midday water(午時水) and realgar wine(雄黄酒) , and hanging calamus and mugwort at door.
Do you know the reasons of those traditions?
Ok, on 11th of July, we will gather together to discuss "the History of Quarantine", and things related to epidemic and pandemic. Of course, Dragon Boat Festival traditions will also be discussed.
In addition, Black Death was the most fatal pandemic recorded in human history. Many plague columns were erected in European cities with great life lost. Those columns have become popular tourist attractions now. That will be our topic too.
Agenda:
1) Warm-up 2) Epidemic and Pandemic in human history 3) The History of Quarantine and Isolation 4) Chinese folk religion/ festivals and relationships with epidemic 5) Some famous plague columns in Europe
Guided Questions:
1) Name any infectious disease you know. 2) What do you know about quarantine and Isolation? 3) Do you know 艋舺青山寺? If not, please pay a visit or google it to find its historical relation with the epidemic. 4) Have you ever visited plague column in Europe? If yes, please bring some pictures and stories to share with us.
