Hi Blissers,

Olivia introduced Dali to us last week and we watched 2 videos about Dalí.

Dali’s full name is Salvador Dalí and was born on May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain.

He is an eccentric, nature and talent for self-promotion made him the most famous representative of the surrealist movement and one of the most widely recognized artists in the world.

In 1922, Dalí moved to Madrid and studied the school of fine arts and he was expelled in 1926 for declaring that no one on the faculty was competent enough to examine me.

In August 1929, he met his lifelong muse and future wife Gala. She was a Russian immigrant ten years his senior, who at that time was married to surrealist poet Paul Éluard. Dalí's relationship with his father was close to rupture. His father strongly disapproved of his romance with Gala. Gala helped balance, or one might say counterbalance, the creative forces in Dalí's life.

His best-known work, The Persistence of Memory, was completed in 1931. The painting, sometimes called Soft Watches, shows melting pocket watches in a landscape setting. It is said that the painting conveys several ideas within the image, chiefly that time is not rigid and everything is destructible.

In a "trial" held in 1934, he was expelled from Surrealist. Dalí was said the only difference between me and the surrealist is that “I am a surrealist”. Of course, his name became synonymous with surrealism.

In 1936, he created what would become 2 of the most iconic objects of the surrealist movement, his Lobster Telephone and Mae West Lips Sofa.

In 1974, he finished Dalí Teatro Museo (Theater-Museum) in Figueres, Spain.

Olivia also showed us Dali’s works. Dalí employed extensive symbolism in his work. For instance, the hallmark "soft watches" that first appear in The Persistence of Memory suggest Einstein's theory that time is relative and not fixed.

Thanks, Olivia.
