The” low wages” topic aroused our hitted discussion from the meeting table to the dining table. We talked about the same problems Taiwan faces and aspired us to think about the solutions those candidates proposed. At the end of the meeting, Ellen reminded us to be“Conscious Citizens” not only in the Election Day but in everyday lives. We can account for the society shaping. All the participants are fulfilled with joy and aspiration. However, due to the slogans and the meanings between lines in the article are so perplexing that Ellen volunteered to write the review for us. Bow to Ellen!!! Here is the review written by Ellen:

Dear Blissers ,

It is wonderful and amazing to having so many of you joined with the Bliss very first meeting of the year ,Blissers who joined the meeting really get involved and devoting a lot in the meeting with quite a few questions and debates back and forth even during the dinner time !! WOW~ this is definitely good sign for Bliss English in year 2016 J

Here’s the quick recap of Ellen’s meeting with the article from the Economist - When what comes down doesn’t goes up.

http://www.economist.com/news/briefing/21650086-salaries-rich-countries-are-stagnating-even-growth-returns-and-politicians-are-paying

Firstly in the meeting, we went over the reasons that wages stop rising over the years, and the scholars reckon a number of big forces are at work:

1. One is that income from capital has been increasing more than the income from labor.

Jeff, Naishin, Vicky and Angel took some time to figure out the definition of “income from capital “which we made lots of debates and discussion on this which everyone got their own interpretation from different point of view.

2. Globalization can reduce the demand for rich-country labor, too!!

3. And the decline of trade union reduce labor’s bargaining power (on wages)

Angel raised a good question that what is the connection between the countries imported most and the decline of trade union in those countries, which Annie, Daniel Chen provided their insight and input, and also we have good debates on those input again toward Angel’s question.

4. In many place, more flexible labor contract make it easier to fill posts without raising wages.

In this session , Jeff suggest a very practical solution for each individual that we can’t ask government to solve this issue for us but strive our best to become the “sough after” and we will then free of the low wages or even unemployed problems .

Then ,what’s the solutions regarding the low wages issue suggested by those scholars and the G7 government?

The 1st and least appealing is re-regulating the labor market so as to limit flexibility.

The 2nd approach is to have “tax cut” or “tax credit”. While the 3rd approach is higher the minimum wages.

It’s interesting to find that not only the 3 presidential candidates of Taiwan and even the G7 government suggested almost the same solutions regarding the low pay issue , and also , we can see so far those solutions do not work well on the low wages issues as the Economist suggested.

So in the end of the meeting , Ellen want every one of us think it over, what individual of us can do to resolved the low wages issues ?As the cause of low wages issues in Taiwan comes very different from the G7 countries and ways more serious.

Johnson and Jeff share the similar opinion that we for sure need to work on ourselves to increase our ability and capability, and becoming the sought after, and of course, if everyone of us in Taiwan do so, the overall competiveness of Taiwan in the global labor market will be increased.

Ellen share a solution on not only resolving the low wages issue , but apply many other public controversy –Being a conscious citizen and consumer , and vote for ourselves , our futures.

Every government and every company will ONLY react and take action to their citizens and consumers who really care about the public issues, and those attention shall finally reflect on the voting result and the buying behavior. If we do care on the low wages issue, the education and the food we eat everyday .Please being a proactive voter!!For me , it may be a cliché years ago, but now it make sense to me , which is “Ask not what the government(companies) can do for you , ask ourselves what each individual of us can do for ourselves .”

So Blissers, don’t hesitate to vote for ourselves on 16th of Jan this coming Saturday J

Big thanks to the Bliss Staffs making all the arrangement so the meeting going so smooth and enjoyable. Also great thanks to all the participants à Angel, Annie, Barkley, Sharon Chang, J.T, Naihsin, Winnie Tu, Naomi, Vicky, Alisa, Joe, Jason, Daniel Chen, Daniel Yang, Daniel Chou, Jeff Chang, Jeff Huang, Johnson, Kevin Huang
