Arrived at---

Last Sat, Blissers gathered in detective book store to explorer the secrets behind the Largest Teenage Gang in the United States; the investigation was led by our devoted senior host, Karl.

Spurred by Donald Trump---

As a senior scout leader, he was very excited and inspired by Donald Trump’s opening speech in national scout Jamboree in 2017. Trump’s speech introduced several of his staffs are Eagle Scout and pointed out Americans live a life on Boy Scout’s value. Karl wondered if this statement is truth and likes to see if there’s a way to duplicate this model to cultivate Taiwan elites.

The Happiest Things for Kids---

Before we look into the Boy Scout’s value, Karl led the discussion of the question “What are the happiest things for kids or teens?” Then he shared the results based on BBC television series and related surveys, children are happiest when they play outside with other children. This condition is also bonded with Boy Scout’s activities. Although Taiwan children and parents pursue happiness, what they aim for success is limited in academic and business success.

Prestigious Figures from Scouts---

Then Karl provided a list of 108 Scouts, surprisingly, most of them are famous and successful celebrities in each field. This evidence shows American elites are deeply influenced by Boy Scout values which are shaping American’s future.

Core Values of Different Countries---

To compare core value among different countries, we also exchanged our observations based on past experiences. Ellen told us French people are trained since they are junior high students to think and look for what is the truth behind and dare to fight for what they believe. Kami and Eric thought honesty would be the core value for Australia and U.S.

BSC in Taiwan--

In the following session, Karl introduced the background, origin, mission, vision and principle of BSC and asked us to think about our impression of BSC in Taiwan. Unfortunately, Taiwan’s BSC is associated with political operation which used to contradict with BSC volunteering spirit.

“Learning by Doing “in BSC--

In the end, Karl summarized the reasons why Boy Scout value can cultivate American elite’s ability. All goals of the scout Corps are to design activities and execute activities through the children themselves. This kind of learning from mistakes accumulated by the self- confidence. Integrate resources through communication and coordination. Being a team builder and communicator of multilateral cooperation. Core literacy is to cultivate people’s ability to adapt to their present and future lives. Give students appropriate situations and develop their ability to solve problems.

Better Generation---

Special thanks to Karl. With his dedicated efforts in preparation, we learned a lot of BSC and the reasons made Americans powerful nation. With his logical and critical questions, we also enjoyed the discussions about education, core values and how people shape their country’s future among different countries. We are touched and inspired by his devotion in Boy Scout management and insistence on preserving the intangible but precious value for children. While watching the video by Karl’s 勇士camp, we are hoping Taiwan parents will realize the importance of these core values and cultivate our children better generation.

Next Meeting after 2019 Jamboree ----

As Karl will join 2019 worldwide Jamboree in USA, we all look forward to Karl’s sharing and inputs in 1st hand observation. Don’t miss the chance to more inspired discussion and critical thinking in 2019.

Reflections:

The location choice was good; the host was welcoming and passionate. Karl was well prepared and had great eye contact with everyone. The presentation consists of ice-breaker activities, PowerPoint, videos and Q&A. Schedule was controlled well while some spontaneous improvising was also encouraged.

A myriad of positive opinions regarding common value and core literacy were emerged from the gathering. Everyone exchanged their views freely, which was inspiring. I consider this meeting a fruitful one and quite enjoyable. I'd recommend it to whoever loves English discussion and cares about Taiwan's future.

With the passion driven by Karl, all participants eager to know how to join “Scout Family”, here are the related links for your reference. Of course you are always welcome to Karl himself for more information. Let’s expect his feedback soon after he comes back from International Jamboree in 2019! Stay Tune!
