Hi Blissers,

Last week, Judith introduced her trip to Tibet to us. Here is Tibet’s brief introduction.

Tibet is the roof of the world and its capital is Lhasa (3,650m, population 500,000)

The temperature during Oct ~ April is -5 and 18 during May to Sep.

The most important crop in Tibet is barley and Meat dishes are likely to be yak, goat, or mutton, often dried, or cooked into a spicy stew with potatoes.

Many people like me, think the Potala Palace (布達拉宮) is the most important place for Tibetan, but actually, it’s a popular tourist attraction. For most Tibetans, Jokhang Temple & Barkhor Square are the most sacred and important temple in Tibet – House of the Buddha. In addition to these places, Judith also visited Mount Everest North Base Camp in Tibet. Its altitude is 5200m.

I think you know Qinghai-Tibet railway (青藏鐵路) and here is its brief introduction.

Ø   Length: 1,956 km

Ø   1st part: Xining ~ Golmud (815 km): 1979 ~ 1984.

Ø   2nd part: Golmud ~ Lhasa (1,142 km): 2000 ~ July 1 2006

It created some No 1 in the world.

Ø   The longest plateau railway: 1,956 km

Ø   The world's highest railway: Tanggula Pass at 5,068 m above sea level

Ø   The world's highest railway station : Tanggula railway station at 5,068 m

Ø   The highest railway tunnel on permafrost: Fenghuoshan tunnel at 4,905 m.

Ø   The longest railway tunnel on permafrost: Kunlunshan Tunnel at 4,767 m, 1,686m long.

Ø   Through longest permafrost: 550km

Every passenger train, it has a doctor and supplies oxygen. Passengers must read the health notice for high-elevation travel and sign the agreement on the card to take the train.

In the end, what should be noticed if you want to visit Tibet?

1.      Good health (no hypertension, heart disease, asthma, pregnant, bad cold, and other chronic illness…)

2.      Mountain sickness (NO Aspirin, sleeping pill, alcohol! These materials will consume more oxygen.) How to avoid? Have good mood!

3.      What to bring with you? (medicine, clothes, cream….)

4.      Respect (don’t talk about independence, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet… etc.)

Judith, thanks for sharing your Tibet trip with us.

The participants are Serina, Ellen, Sophia, Vicky, Hank, Cherry, Joanna, Naihsin, Selina, Natalie, Joe Kao, Kevin Huang, Angela, Sanli and Daniel.

Here is the meeting picture.

Due to year end party rehearsal, there is no meeting in December 1th. Please notice.

Hi Blissers,

Last week, Ellen shared an article “Asia’s Lonely Hearts” from the Economist magazine with us. The article is discussing why many Asian women don’t get hitched (married). You know, according to the article, in Bangkok, 20% of 40-44-year old women are not married; in Tokyo, 21%; among university graduates of that age in Singapore, 27%. What an amazing number! The conclusion from the Economist is that East Asia’s growing cohorts of unmarried reflect less the breakdown of marriage than the fact that they are avoiding it.

We separated into several groups and discussed why Asian women would rather stay single than get married. Basically, we agreed with the viewport of the Economist. In Asia, the responsibility for taking care of the family is women, not men, even though they have full-time job. So, their burden is very heavy. At the same time, more women are highly educated and financially independent, so more of them can pursue a single life that may appeal more than the drudgery of a traditional marriage. In addition, we think, nowadays, the working time is too long so that they don’t have time to make boyfriends. Also, they enjoy plenty of activities such as swimming, travel and so on. They are not lonely at all.

Ellen, thanks for sharing the article with us and we had a good time.

The participants are Karl, Sean (灌強), Selina, Kevin Chang, Vicky, Natalie, Jessica Yang, Kevin Huang, Yvonne, Jenny Shan, Sanli and Daniel.

The meeting picture is here.

Time flies. The meeting in November 24th is the last meeting this year. Please take the last chance to attend the meeting. The host is Judith and her meeting outline and agenda is below.

Notice: Anyone who joins the meeting must order minimum NT$130 drink or meal.

Hi Blissers,

What do think of robot? A robot is like a mechanic arm works at car assembly factory? It’s more than that. Last Saturday, Angel introduced many robots to us. Some robots can dance, some can play violin and some can clean house. Due to advance technology, many robots can move fast and smoothly, but the cost is very terrible.

For instance, ASIMO, invented by HONDA, can dance and move fast (about 9Km/hour), but do you know the cost? $1,000,000. You can also rent it. The rent is $20,000 per day.

Also, some of them look like real man, for example, dental patient robot. It was invented by Japan. Its function is to simulate dental patient. When the dentist skill is not good enough and may hurt her. She will voice.

Angel, thanks for your effort to let us know more about robot.

A new member – Joanna Kao attended the meeting.

The other participants are Barkley, Vickey, Cherry, Joe Kao, Sanli, Selina, Vera, Serina, Mengta, Jeff, Michael Huang and Daniel

Here is the meeting picture.

At the coming Saturday, Ellen is the host and her meeting topic is “Asia’s Lonely Hearts”. Before I give you her meeting outline and agenda, one thing needs everyone’s help.

Notice: Anyone who joins the meeting must order minimum NT$130 drink or meal. Last week, Brown Café checked our invoice and we didn’t meet the requirement.

Here is Ellen’s meeting outline and agenda.

Here is the article.

The decline of Asian marriage
Asia's lonely hearts
Women are rejecting marriage in Asia. The social implications are serious

TWENTY years ago a debate erupted about whether there were specific “Asian values”. Most attention focused on dubious claims by autocrats that democracy was not among them. But a more intriguing, if less noticed, argument was that traditional family values were stronger in Asia than in America and Europe, and that this partly accounted for Asia's economic success. In the words of Lee Kuan Yew, former prime minister of Singapore and a keen advocate of Asian values, the Chinese family encouraged “scholarship and hard work and thrift and deferment of present enjoyment for future gain”.

On the face of it his claim appears persuasive still. In most of Asia, marriage is widespread and illegitimacy almost unknown. In contrast, half of marriages in some Western countries end in divorce, and half of all children are born outside wedlock. The recent riots across Britain, whose origins many believe lie in an absence of either parental guidance or filial respect, seem to underline a profound difference between East and West.

·         Asia

Yet marriage is changing fast in East, South-East and South Asia, even though each region has different traditions. The changes are different from those that took place in the West in the second half of the 20th century. Divorce, though rising in some countries, remains comparatively rare. What's happening in Asia is a flight from marriage .

Marriage rates are falling partly because people are postponing getting hitched. Marriage ages have risen all over the world, but the increase is particularly marked in Asia. People there now marry even later than they do in the West. The mean age of marriage in the richest places—Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong—has risen sharply in the past few decades, to reach 29-30 for women and 31-33 for men.

A lot of Asians are not marrying later. They are not marrying at all. Almost a third of Japanese women in their early 30s are unmarried; probably half of those will always be. Over one-fifth of Taiwanese women in their late 30s are single; most will never marry. In some places, rates of non-marriage are especially striking: in Bangkok, 20% of 40-44-year old women are not married; in Tokyo, 21%; among university graduates of that age in Singapore, 27%. So far, the trend has not affected Asia's two giants, China and India. But it is likely to, as the economic factors that have driven it elsewhere in Asia sweep through those two countries as well; and its consequences will be exacerbated by the sex-selective abortion practised for a generation there. By 2050, there will be 60m more men of marriageable age than women in China and India.

The Asian avoidance of marriage is new, and striking. Only 30 years ago, just 2% of women were single in most Asian countries. The share of unmarried women in their 30s in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong has risen 20 points or more (see chart below), “a very sharp change in a relatively short period”, says Gavin Jones of the National University of Singapore. In Thailand, the number of women entering their 40s without being married increased from 7% in 1980 to 12% in 2000. In some cities, rates of non-marriage are higher: 20% among women aged 40-44 in Bangkok; 27% among 30-34-year-olds in Hong Kong. In South Korea, young men complain that women are on “marriage strike”.

What is remarkable about the Asian experience is not that women are unmarried in their 30s—that happens in the West, too—but that they have never been married and have rarely cohabited. In Sweden, the proportion of women in their late 30s who are single is higher than in Asia, at 41%. But that is because marriage is disappearing as a norm. Swedish women are still setting up homes and having children, just outside wedlock. Not in Asia. Avoiding both illegitimacy and cohabitation, Asian women appear to be living a more celibate life than their Western sisters (admittedly, they could also be under-reporting rates of cohabitation and pre-marital sex). The conclusion is that East Asia's growing cohorts of unmarried women reflect less the breakdown of marriage than the fact that they are avoiding it.

The joy of staying single

Women are retreating from marriage as they go into the workplace. That's partly because, for a woman, being both employed and married is tough in Asia. Women there are the primary caregivers for husbands, children and, often, for ageing parents; and even when in full-time employment, they are expected to continue to play this role. This is true elsewhere in the world, but the burden that Asian women carry is particularly heavy. Japanese women, who typically work 40 hours a week in the office, then do, on average, another 30 hours of housework. Their husbands, on average, do three hours. And Asian women who give up work to look after children find it hard to return when the offspring are grown. Not surprisingly, Asian women have an unusually pessimistic view of marriage. According to a survey carried out this year, many fewer Japanese women felt positive about their marriage than did Japanese men, or American women or men.

At the same time as employment makes marriage tougher for women, it offers them an alternative. More women are financially independent, so more of them can pursue a single life that may appeal more than the drudgery of a traditional marriage. More education has also contributed to the decline of marriage, because Asian women with the most education have always been the most reluctant to wed—and there are now many more highly educated women.

No marriage, no babies

The flight from marriage in Asia is thus the result of the greater freedom that women enjoy these days, which is to be celebrated. But it is also creating social problems. Compared with the West, Asian countries have invested less in pensions and other forms of social protection, on the assumption that the family will look after ageing or ill relatives. That can no longer be taken for granted. The decline of marriage is also contributing to the collapse in the birth rate. Fertility in East Asia has fallen from 5.3 children per woman in the late 1960s to 1.6 now. In countries with the lowest marriage rates, the fertility rate is nearer 1.0. That is beginning to cause huge demographic problems, as populations age with startling speed. And there are other, less obvious issues. Marriage socialises men: it is associated with lower levels of testosterone and less criminal behaviour. Less marriage might mean more crime.

Can marriage be revived in Asia? Maybe, if expectations of those roles of both sexes change; but shifting traditional attitudes is hard. Governments cannot legislate away popular prejudices. They can, though, encourage change. Relaxing divorce laws might, paradoxically, boost marriage. Women who now steer clear of wedlock might be more willing to tie the knot if they know it can be untied—not just because they can get out of the marriage if it doesn't work, but also because their freedom to leave might keep their husbands on their toes. Family law should give divorced women a more generous share of the couple's assets. Governments should also legislate to get employers to offer both maternal and paternal leave, and provide or subsidise child care. If taking on such expenses helped promote family life, it might reduce the burden on the state of looking after the old.

Asian governments have long taken the view that the superiority of their family life was one of their big advantages over the West. That confidence is no longer warranted. They need to wake up to the huge social changes happening in their countries and think about how to cope with the consequences.

Hi Blissers,

Do you know what CPR is? CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, cardio meaning heart, pulmonary meaning lungs, and resuscitation meaning revive. In layman’s(一般人/俗人) terms, it’s used to revive an adult, child, or infant that has stopped breathing and/or whose heart isn’t beating.

HOW DO I PERFORM CPR?

Before starting CPR, the rescuer should establish if the victim is conscious or not by asking if they are okay or gently shaking their shoulder. If no response, begin CPR for one minute in an adult/two minutes in a child if you are alone and/or do not have immediate access to a phone. If someone else is with you, then they should call 119 immediately.

One of the best ways a layman can remember “what is CPR” is by thinking of a CAB:

• C – initiate chest compressions
• A – check the victim’s airway.
• B – initiate rescue breathing.

However, the American Heart Association now recommends that both laymen rescuers and rusty certified rescuers skip steps A and B and continue chest compressions until paramedics arrive, unless the victim is an infant.

C – Chest Compressions

When the heart stops and ceases(終止) to pump blood throughout the body, chest compressions are used to restore at least some of that blood flow. It’s important to remember that CPR is different for adults, children, and infants:

• What is CPR – Adult

In an adult, the responder will interlace(交叉) his/her hands so that one hand is atop the other and then begin to perform 100 downward, rhythmic, and quick chest compressions near the center of the chest. Each compression should depress the chest at least two inches and allow the chest to fully rise between compressions.

• What is CPR – Child

In a child one to eight-years-old, the responder will use the heel of just one hand to perform 100 downward, rhythmic, and quick chest compressions near the lower portion of the breastbone just above where the ribs meet. Each compression should depress the child’s chest about 2 inches.

• What is CPR - Infant

In an infant, the responder will use only two fingertips to perform 100 downward, rhythmic, and quick chest compressions per minute. Compressions should be performed on the breastbone just under the center of the nipple line and at a depth of 1 ½ inches. As with an adult and child, the infant’s back should be on a firm surface during CPR.

Tip: Compressions can be tiring in an adult and older child. Be sure to keep your shoulders aligned with your hands and your elbows locked so that your body weight will assist you with the compressions.

Trained CPR responders will do the same as the above, but at 30 compressions a minute before moving on to the airway. Untrained and rusty CPR responders will continue the compressions as described above and not move on to the airway unless the victim is an infant.

Sheena took an Annie doll and an infant model with her and demonstrated CPR to us. The wonderful thing is everyone had chance to practice on the spot. So, we are luck to learn and have chance to practice CPR. It’s really pity for those who didn’t join the meeting.

The lucky members are Hank, Uncle Ting, Vicky, Barkley, Selina, Jeff, Kevin Huang, Angela, Millie and Daniel.

Hi Blissers,

Last week, Vicky talked about how Amazon affects book business. A decade ago, when you wanted to buy a book, you would go to physical store and if it gave you 10% discount, you would satisfy with it. But, now many people go to physical store to check the book and buy it online. Meanwhile, you can get more discounts. Therefore, sales of adult paperbacks and hardcovers fell 18 percent between 2010 and 2011. We discussed this. Some members like me will buy books online now or borrow books from library. Some members are afraid the physical stores will close, so they buy books from them to support it. Vicky also told us publisher’s and author’s viewpoint. Publishers hate Amazon because the book price in Amazon is lower than theirs and Amazon still earns money. But, authors like Amazon because publishers only pay them about 10% sale price, but Amazon give them 20%, 30% or more. In addition, we seldom see a small book store in Taiwan, but there are a lot in Europe, why? The answer is “fixed price”. In order for small and independent book stores to survive, many countries have “fixed price” for books. In other words, the same book will have the same price in different types of book stores so that the small store can earn money from books. In the end, do you know what Amazon logo means? There is a yellow arrow in the bottom of Amazon logo and shows “A to Z”. It indicates that they do have all types of goods. Thanks Vicky for sharing the article with us.

Here is the outline and agenda from Vicky.

=======

Hi Blissers,
I'd like to talk about the book business this Saturday, especially focus on how Amazon.com affects the business.

A decade ago, when you wanted to buy a book, you went to a bricks-and-mortar bookstore in the neighborhood and would be happy and satisfied with 10% off list price. How times have changed. Nowadays you usually go to some online booksellers like "books.com(
博客來)" or "Amazon.com" instead of physical stores to find a bargain. What you expect now is no longer 10% off, you ask for more discount. No (enough) discount, no purchase.

Amazon.com provides discount books and does attract lots of customers. It controls 60% of the U.S. ebook market and 75% of print book sold on the internet. In the meantime, the second-largest physical bookstore--Borders--applied for the bankruptcy protection and began liquidating 226 of it stores in the U.S. Not only the booksellers but also the publishers and authors are threatened or affected by the thriving of Amazon. We will talk about an interesting antitrust lawsuit between the U.S. Justice Department and Apple/publishing houses due to Amazon's aggressive pricing.

Besides, do you know there are more than 15 countries which adopt fixed book price scheme? Do you think the scheme increase or reduce competition? Let's discuss on Saturday. Please come and join us.

Agenda:
2:00~2:40  Self-introduction and purchase experience sharing
2:40~3:40  How Amazon burns the book business (part 1)
3:40~3:50  Break
3:50~4:40   How Amazon burns the book business (part 2)
4:40~5:30  Group discussion

Hi Blissers,

Last week, Owen introduced the history of auction to us. It is generally accepted that auctions were recorded as early as 500 B.C. They were Babylonian wedding auctions, held annually, where women were sold for the purpose of marriage. Auctions were also used extensively during the Roman Empire. The refinement of the auction process grew to be much more organized and defined. In today's language, the key players became the consignor (the person on whose behalf the property was sold), the organizer (regulator, financial backer), the promoter (advertiser, auctioneer), and the buyer (highest and final bidder).

Basically, it has 2 types of auction – primary and secondary types of auction.

1.    Primary types of auction.

English auction, also known as an open ascending price auction. This type of auction is arguably the most common form of auction in use today. Participants bid openly against one another, with each subsequent bid higher than the previous bid.

Dutch auction also known as an open descending price auction. In practice, however, the Dutch auction is not widely used.

Sealed first-price auction, also known as a first-price sealed-bid auction (FPSB). Sealed first-price auctions are commonly used in tendering, particularly for government contracts and auctions for mining leases.

Vickrey auction, also known as a sealed-bid second-price auction. This is identical to the sealed first-price auction except that the winning bidder pays the second highest bid rather than their own.

2.    Secondary type of auction

All-pay auction is an auction in which all bidders must pay their bids regardless of whether they win.

Buyout auction is an auction with a set price (the 'buyout' price) that any bidder can accept at any time during the auction, thereby immediately ending the auction and winning the item.

Combinatorial auction is any auction for the simultaneous sale of more than one item where bidders can place bids on an "all-or-nothing" basis on "packages" rather than just individual items.

No-reserve auction (NR), also known as an absolute auction, is an auction in which the item for sale will be sold regardless of price.

Reverse auction is a type of auction in which the role of the buyer and seller are reversed, with the primary objective to drive purchase prices downward.

Silent auction is a variant of an English auction where bids are written on a sheet of paper.

Chinese auction is a type of raffle獎卷 (actually a combination of raffle and auction) that is typically featured at charity, church festival and numerous other events.

We held Bliss Auction annually as well and 17 members joined the auction.

They are Frank, Yvonne, Selina, Barkley, Nelly, Cara, Patric, Sheena, Ashow, Annie, Ting Chen, Millie, Angela, Mengta, Kevin Huang, Natalie and Daniel.

Here is the meeting picture.

In the coming Saturday, Willy is the host and his meeting topic is Colorful life III (When vodka meets cucumber).

Here is his meeting outline and agenda.

Colorful life III (When vodka meets cucumber)

Dear Blissers:

Matthew Paige Damon is one of my favorite Hollywood movie stars.  Benjamin Géza Affleck Boldt cooperated with him to complete Good Will Hunting in 1997.  This movie caught my eye and then I began to be Damon’s fans.  Recently “The Bourne Legacy(2012)” has been played in theaters and occupied in Top 3 sales amount.  It is part four of one series movies.  The part one was “The Bourne Identity 2002”, part two “The Bourne Supremacy 2004” and Part three “The Bourne Ultimatum 2007”.  Wow, I am late.  Although he is not the film actor at this time, I still have to catch his step.  Therefore, I am going to go on holding my classical series meeting – Colorful life III in 2012.

If you missed Colorful life part one and part two before, your life would not be different.  Once you came to part three, you will get wider view in more joyful manner to see the world.  Why? I am telling you why.

Some members of Bliss usually asked me many questions about Slavic people, culture, business, language and politics.  It is because of my background.  Yes, I had lived in Maskva for forty months (1994-1997) and known about this area more than you.  Unfortunately I know it more, I fear more.  But it is not the correct attitude in my opinion.  After considering for long time, I convince myself to carry on the topic.

There are so many legends, incredible, heroes, sensation, diamond, Inspire and Aria stories and history happened here.  You may say why the kinds of styles look like HTC’s products’ commercial names.  Believe me, it is just coincidence ONLY.

Why says Legend for Russia?

Because of Yuri Gagarin who is the first Astronaut in the world.

Why says Incredible for Russia?

Because the country has 17,075,400 km x km land areas (474 times bigger than Taiwan)

Why says Hero for Russia?

Because Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Pushkin created the Brilliant Russian art and culture.

Why says Sensation for Russia?

Because Vitalii Vladasovich Grachyov, high falsetto voice and a vocal range of 5 octaves in the world only so far.

Why says Diamond for Russia?

Because there are many kinds of Diamonds here.  Cubic Zirconia, Fake Diamond and real diamond.

 Why says Inspire for Russia?

Because in the movie of Enemy at the Gates, you can see how Vasily Zaytsev INSPIRES comrades of army to fight with Germany accusations.

 Why says Aria for Russia?

Because of Sveta.  She has spent more than decade in researching ICONS of Orthodox Church and is the authoritativeness in the field in Taiwan.

Now you might understand why I use such adjective to describe the country.  Chinese people said seeing is believing.  You come to my meeting, you come to Russia closer.  It is not important how much you know about Russia.  The importance is you will begin or improve your skill of appreciate life and environments after 2012-October-13th.

Agenda

14:00-14:10 Warm up / introduction for new comers and members

14:11-14:55 To chew over the significance of Soviet socialistic placards.

14:56-15:30 File or Photo appreciation (Russian artistries)

15:31-15:50 Russian vodka taste

15:51-16:10 Russian cucumber taste

16:11-16:30 Russian bread taste

16:31-16:40 Amber, Fossil appreciation

16:40-17:00 Matryoshka, appreciation

17:00-17:30 Conclusion

Welcome to bring your friends, lovers, relatives and whoever likes English to BLISS!  For respecting our attendees and host who devotes much to the meeting and for enjoying the complete process, please come no later than 14:30.  Thank you.

Last Saturday, it was our outing. We got together in Beitou tree house and had a cooking game. After a fierce competition, group east won the game. We danced along campfire after dinner and had a small birthday party. The most exciting moment was Barkly proposed to Sharon and she said “YES” to Barkley. We enjoyed cooking, eating, dancing and had a happy ending.

Hi Blissers,

Last Saturday, Mengta presented his wedding in Guam.

Do you know why Mengta chose to marry in Guam, not in Taiwan? Save time. He decided to merry in June and married in October last year. It took him about 3 – 4 months to prepare the wedding. If he married in Taiwan, it will take him more time to prepare because last year was the 100th year for our country establishment. Many people got married. Therefore, many restaurants were full booked. That was impossible for him to marry last year. Of course, the disadvantage of marring in Guam is it costs him a lot.

Guam is unincorporated territory of the United States and sits in the east to Taiwan. Its land area is twice Taipei City and it takes about 3 and a half hour from Taiwan to Guam by plane. Guam is famous for wedding, so it has many churches around the island. Many 5-star hotels also have chapels (small churches). Mengta gave us a simple glance of the church and hotel. He also revealed that the make-up in Guam is not as good as Taiwan. After the wedding, Mengta joined a city tour and some tour packages. One activity Mengta and his wife took surprised us. Do you know what it is? “Shooting”. Shooting in honeymoon? Anyway, they enjoyed it very much.

Barkley has been there in March this year and he shared his experience to us as well.

Thanks, Mengta and Barkley.

There are 2 new members join the meeting – Sofia Chen and Erica.

The other participants are Vicky Lu, Iris, Ting Chen, Barkley, Kurt, Selina, Joe Kao, Kevin Huang, Cara, Natalie, Sylvia and Daniel.

Hi Blissers,

Olivia introduced Dali to us last week and we watched 2 videos about Dalí.

Dali’s full name is Salvador Dalí and was born on May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain.

He is an eccentric, nature and talent for self-promotion made him the most famous representative of the surrealist movement and one of the most widely recognized artists in the world.

In 1922, Dalí moved to Madrid and studied the school of fine arts and he was expelled in 1926 for declaring that no one on the faculty was competent enough to examine me.

In August 1929, he met his lifelong muse and future wife Gala. She was a Russian immigrant ten years his senior, who at that time was married to surrealist poet Paul Éluard. Dalí's relationship with his father was close to rupture. His father strongly disapproved of his romance with Gala. Gala helped balance, or one might say counterbalance, the creative forces in Dalí's life.

His best-known work, The Persistence of Memory, was completed in 1931. The painting, sometimes called Soft Watches, shows melting pocket watches in a landscape setting. It is said that the painting conveys several ideas within the image, chiefly that time is not rigid and everything is destructible.

In a "trial" held in 1934, he was expelled from Surrealist. Dalí was said the only difference between me and the surrealist is that “I am a surrealist”. Of course, his name became synonymous with surrealism.

In 1936, he created what would become 2 of the most iconic objects of the surrealist movement, his Lobster Telephone and Mae West Lips Sofa.

In 1974, he finished Dalí Teatro Museo (Theater-Museum) in Figueres, Spain.

Olivia also showed us Dali’s works. Dalí employed extensive symbolism in his work. For instance, the hallmark "soft watches" that first appear in The Persistence of Memory suggest Einstein's theory that time is relative and not fixed.

Thanks, Olivia.

We have 3 new members joined the meeting. They are Naomi, Tracey and Albert Tseng.

The other participants are Erica, Ting Chen, Jessica Yang, Michael Huang, Ellen, Cara, Selina and Daniel.

Hi Blissers,

Ashow gave us a brief introduction of English contract last week.

First, she introduced what a contract is.

A contract is an "enforceable" agreement between two or more parties creating obligations.

The point is "enforceable".

Then, she introduced some English terminology ralating to contract.

We know the word (terminology), but we don't know its meaning in law.

Here are some of them.

damage: Loss or injury to person or property.

damages: Money paid as the normal remedy in the law as compensation for an individual or company's loss cause by a wrongdoes.

consideration: Bargained-for exchange for performance/promise by one party from the other.

POA(Power of Attorney): An instrument granting someone authority to act as agent for the grantor.

Ashow also showed us the framework of a contract.

The last event was we seperated as 4 groups and negotiated the Governing Law in the contract.

We are really appreciating Ashow's introduction of English contract.

We had 2 new members joined this meeting. They are Joe Wang and Erica Chen.

The other participants are Jessica Yang, Joyce, Ting Chen, Mengta, Selina, Joey, Iris, Ellen, Olivia, 灌強, Joe Kao, Kevin Huang, Cara, Sanli, Natalie and Daniel.

Here is the meeting picture link.

In the upcoming Saturday, Olivia will be the host and her topic is “Who is mind of Genius? Dalil”.

Below information comes from Olivia.

================================================

Dali said; 'I am the genius, I don't have the right to die. The genius

has been gone, but his works remain immortal.'

That's true. Dali left indelible mark: everything from cinema to

painting, to jewelry and fashion to design and advertising even comedy

in 20 century. There isn't much that Dali hasn't changed. I think his

role is just like Ladygaga today. Let's go into his dream world and

find his marvelous ideas this Saturday!

Agenda:

*2:00-2:30 Warm up & English vocabulary

*2:30-2: 50 Who is Dali?

*2:50-3:10 Q&A

*3:10-3:40 Group exercise (double image)

Hi Blissers,
Last week, Genie gave us an amazing and wonderful meeting.
In the beginning, we red an article and most of us thought it is difficult because too many vocabulary we don't know it.
Genie showed us another way which we have never known to appreciate the article.
She also taught us to make Limerick.
Here are some of works.

Shop wisely before buying anything,

Day in and day out you work hard to survive.

Light on or light off you need to strive.
It’s better to have a father give you something.

(2)

Bliss is the best club on the earth

Here you have English, or friends, or both

Four outings for fun per year

If you want, join us with a beer

Come here open your mind and your mouth

Also, we played a game. We chose a topic - Dog and everyone wrote a sentence about it and didn't show it to anyone.
We combined all sentences together. Amazing thing happened.
Those sentences really had some connection between them and it formed a good article.
Here it is.

DOG

I do not like dogs a bit

I cannot figure why they never stop barking.

He is the best friend of human beings.

No one likes dog shit

Dog is the most faithful animal to human beings

With a dog, you will never feel lonely
