Hi Blissers,
Last Saturday, Annie gave us an abundant of the history of English language.
It started from the history of England, Old English, Middle English, then Modern English.

AD43, Romans invaded England and Britain becomes part of the Roman Empire.
The invasion affected Britain's language, culture , geography and architecture.
The old English is around AD450 -1100 and Angle, Saxon and Jute (the Anglo-Saxons) invaded.
Several written works have survived from the old English period.
The most famous is a heroic epic poem called "Beowulf". It is the oldest known English poem.

Middle English is around 1100-1500AD.
During the period, Black Death broke out and some wars happened such as The Hundred Year's War and
The wars of Roses.

Modern English is from around 1500AD to the present.
Modern English developed after William Caxton established his printing press at Westminster Abbey in 1476.
By the time of Shakespear's writings (1592-1616), the language had become clearly recognizable as Modern English.
There were three big developments in the world at the beginning of Modern English period: the Renaissance,
the Industrial Revolution, and the British Colonialism. It was during the English Renaissance that most of the words from Greek and Latin entered English.
Annie also introduced some Victorian poetry to us.
"Grow old with me!The best is yet to be."
"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways."
In addition, do you know how English flag makes?
When Scotland, England and Ireland united to United Kingdom of Great Britain,
they combined their flags to become English flag.
The participants were Ellen, Kevin, Reyes, Joe, Sanli, Selina, Yvonne, Naihsin, Tom, Millie and Daniel.
The meeting's picture link is HERE.
By the way, on 7/15, some blissers went to watch exhibition in the morning and went to Jeff's KTV room singing songs in the afternoon.

Dear Blissers,

Daniel introduced an amazing woman Sophie Vandebroek last week.

Sophie Vandebroek was promoted to be chief technology officer (CTO) of Xerox in January, 2006.

Unfortunately, she lost her husband in 1996, and she had to support three children on her own.

In this extreme situation, she had to not only take care of her children but also pursue her career.

Daniel shared with us about Sophie Vandebroek's strategy to keep balance between life and work:  "Delegate, simplify and leverage IT(informatin technology)"

We could use this strategy to our lives. Hope that we all can find balance in our lives.

There were 13 people joined us last week. They were Daniel, Jeff, Sanli, Selina, Annie, Care, Brooke, Ashow, Joe, Kevin, Barkley, Angela and Millie.

In these days, many people work overtime, especially, if you work in high technology company in Taiwan. Therefore,
many people are face to the challenge of balancing work and home life. Recently, I read an old Advanced magazine issued by Studio Classroom in 2006, December.
It has a People article which introduces a career woman - Sophie Vandebroek, CTO (chief technology officer) of Xerox and she is still Xerox CTO now.
She lost her husband suddenly and needed to raise 3 children on her own. In the meantime she still can keep her fast-track career.
I would like to share what strategies she took to balance work and home life with you.  See you on 5/5.

Dear Blissers,

It's Iris's Meeting this week !!! :D

Iris will share us about the philosophy of "boundaries" to take control of your life.
I think It's a really important and interesting thing to know when to say "Yes" and when to say "No".
Please come and join us!
The meeting place will be Brown Coffee 2F.

Regards,
Chloe

Dear Blissers,

Personally, I think that we oriental people are afraid of saying no and may feel too stressed even burnout.

Since our souls and heart are "a pearl of great value", which we need to protect or treasure, two psychologists, Dr. Henry Cloud, Dr. John Townsend, wrote this book "Boundaries" to help us bring new health to our lives.

Accoring to this book, Boundaries -physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual are persoanl "property lines" that define who you are and who you are not.

Let's discover together
-when to say no and when to say yes to cut down the stress
-how boundaries give us the freedom to walk as the loving, giving, fulfilled individual

Here are the agenda we will discuss this coming Saturday

BOUNDARIES: when to say YES When to Say NO

  I.  What are Boundaries

  II. Common Boundary Myths

  III. Boundaries and Your Family

  IV. Boundaries and Work

  V. Success with Boundaries

Hope after this meeting, we all are on the way to boundary maturity.

cheers, your Iris

Dear Blissers,

How are you today? Hope you all had a good day :)
Just a friendly reminder that there is no meeting this week due to the adjusted workday.

Thanks.

Dear Blissers,

Alex talked about entrepreneurship last week. He shared his experience about his entrepreneur journey of EZTABLE.
The central idea of EZTABLE is "Hack, everything". You have to think out of box so that you could achieve success.
If you want to start your business, keep your dream alive. It's never too late to make your dream come true, but don't make you too late.

The participants were Ellen, Elise, Anita, Naihsin, Jeff, Judith, Kevin, Natasha, Selina, Sanli, Justin, Chloe, Cathy, Ashow, Ting, Mahatma, Angela, Barkley and Daniel.
