17:00-17:30 Group Discussion /Q&A

Introduction from 1st Industrial Revolution to 3rd Industrial Revolution

1.      Each economic growth comes from manufacturing revolution. In the history, we have been through three times for every 50 or 60 years. For example, 1st industrial revolution stemmed from the invention of stem machine during 19th century,, 2nd from mass production model in the beginning of 20th century; 3rd one for automation in 1970s.

2.      For these 50 years, we have tried to improve productivity or economic growth by globalization, that is, to reduce cost by locate offshore using cheap labor, or by large orders with monoproduct in stocks and in faster turnover like Zara. In fact, those shaped the same as 1970s mode only with a slight change in location, size and the ways of operation. The productivity improved only by adding capital, more labor with lower cost and mass production.

3.      On the other hand, Tech innovation has made more advances. For example, IOT has made big waves in media, services, entertainment. Nevertheless, our productivity was on the decline and economic growth was staggering. Perhaps, we are viewing You YouTube and scrolling FB at work?

Economic growth from the 3rd Industrial Revolution till now

Customers market (regional) to offshore/ larger/monoproduct/bulk made/more collection turnover in a short time

Expectation to 4.0 Industrial Revolution

1.      Advanced Robots who collaborate with human and are programmed to enact complex and nonrepetitive tasks.

2.      3d Printing having improved plastic industry now makes its way to medal, both industries of which contribute 25% of Industrial Productivity. It made production more flexible and customized.

3.      So, the customer markets will turn to be localized with smaller-scaled orders, diversified to meet the regional need and accordingly with the cost down in goods transportation, it would be environment-friendly.

4.      More information about (Horizontal/vertical Integration/Augmented reality/Cloud & cyber security-Simulation/Industrial Internet & Analytics)

New words: nation-wide, postal vote, proceed, hurdle, ballot, voluntary, advocate,  parliamentary, appropriation, unforeseen, plaintiff, provision, plebiscite, deflect, radical education, bound to, plumber, neutral, military, prime minister, liberal fitter, hidden agenda, endorse, the last update, dwindling, equitable, reply-paid envelop., regional pick-up, disability, uphold rights, attorney general, divisive, costly, optimal, manipulate,Cataronia, distinction, Referendums

Steven’s Meeting was a very successful one for us to discuss continuously

until 18:00. At first, Ellen led the article reading but not for too long before Steven made it to the meeting. How supportive he was all the way from HS!!!

Steven clarified the following ambiguities for us in the meeting:

1.      Transsexuals mean having done operations while transgender is not.

2.      The issue of “Austrian same-sex marriage” postal vote is from a political manipulation

3.      “Gender performativity” means “Manish” showing masculine quality while a womanish showing feminism characteristic which may exist in either men or women with different ratios and “gender” is “culture-constructed”, not so called “born that way”.

4.      In general, “She” boys are used to be bullied victims more than “He” girls in schools.

5.      “Equity” means giving appropriate potion to people based on what they need while “equality” means giving every person the same portion.

6.      Besides the networking helps spreading, the “virus trend” on the same-sex issue come from “the celebrities’ supports and of self-confession on it.

7.      “Reproduction of offspring” can be settled in three ways: adoption, undergoing giving-birth operations besides transsexual ones, or “making babies” through sold “sperms” or “eggs”.

8.      The distinction among “sex”, “gender” and “sexuality” is thought necessarily to teach or discuss in high schools especially in one-sex ones to avoid misunderstanding between “homo-sexual, bi-sexual” myths and same-sex affection.

9.      Critical thinking is very important, meanly having awareness to identify the stand and favored viewpoint the writer is taking so as not to become biased.

10.  “Referendums” is not trust-worthy, not truly democratic.

Reflections:

We appreciated Steven’s elaborate guidance on the discussion, related article reading and the participants’ precious outputs. It helped us to know better about “same-sex” and the importance to spread the knowledge. We look forward to his informative meeting soon.

New Blisser:Jean Hung

New words: debut, professionalism, internalize, conduct, preparatory, exploit, posture, rhythm, intonation, vocal, emphasize, browse, differentiate, accented, sense of touch, prioritize, category, innermost, benefit, elaborate, sincerity

I.                    Why chose the topic?

As inspired by the book “Life List” by Brett, a 14-year-old girl shown as follows, Kami conducted Bliss meeting on 10/21.

1.Have a baby

2.Kiss Nick Nicol

3.Make the cheerleading squad

4.Earn straight A’s

5.Ski the Alps

6.Get a dog

7. Answer correctly when Sister Rose calls on me and I’m talking to Carrie.

8.Go to Paris

9.Stay friends with Carrie Newson forever

10.Go to Northwestern

11.Be super friendly and nice

12.Help poor people

13.Have a really cool house

14.Buy a horse

15.Run with the bulls

16.Learn French

17.Fall in Love

II.                  Meeting started…

Though a debut in Bliss, Kami showed her professionalism by her preparatory efforts on studying “Bliss Host Reminder”, discussing with Ellen, internalizing how to successfully conduct a meeting.  All the efforts paid and participants benefited more than expected, for which we admired and appreciated so much.

III.                Proceeded the meeting as scheduled, please refer to 10/21 Bliss meeting notice for more details!!!

IV.                Some tips shared by Kami

1.      Try best to have all the participants exploit all the senses in the meeting, for which Kami firstly called for our sense of touch to differentiate our feeling about the Life List with hearted-shaped cushion meaning “Love”, a “$” and “Like” sign cardboard boxes.

2.      Secondly, she asked for different postures like “streching”, “moving around”, and “standing up” besides sitting position.

3.      Thirdly, she attracted our attention by “vocal practice” on “it” “is” and demonstrated that speakers should “emphasize” the words they wanted to focus on, not just giving each word with same accented level.

4.      Fourthly, she remained silent and waited for our volunteering expression on item11-20 on “Life List”.

5.      Last but not the least; she grouped us according to light-color and dark-color clothing into two discussion circle. Very creative!!!

V.                  All ears up

Kami suggested English learners notice how “rhythm, “speaking skills “and “intonation” work during any listening clip. The more details we notice and imitate, the more improvement we can make!!

VI.              Reflections:

Under the guidance and elaborate design by Kami, all the participants including new Blissers like Jean Hung, Tim Lai, expressed themselves well in fluent English with sincerity. We learned the tips how to speak well as native speakers, realize our dream in daily life, and have courage to show our innermost world in front of others. We really enjoyed the fruitful meeting ever and look forward to Kami’s next meeting soon.

My Dear Blissers.

“Ignorance” begets “Fear”~

while “Knowledge” begets “Understanding”

How do we look deeply into the issue?

This Saturday we are so pleased to have New Blood, Steven, who majors in art history, double minor in sexuality diversity studies and contemporary Asian studies , will unveil the myth and estimate the lurking problems and facts which greet “Same-sex Marriage”.

Welcome to discuss this “challenging” topic with Blissers on 10/28 together!! Let's try to learn and see this contentious topic from a different angle together :-)

*Also kindly note: This Saturday’s Meeting Place will be at東豐喜藝文空間, 師大路6813TOHOHI Arts Corner at Exit 3 Taipower MRT Station, addressed at No. 13, Lane 68, Shih-ta Road, Taipei, charged at NT$150 per person with a cup of tea, the detailed location of which is attached

Meeting Agenda:

It’s the meeting notice from Steven, and as he will be late for the meeting (he need to work in HS and go to our meeting around 3pm), Ellen will help to handle the 1st part of the meeting, which is article reading part.

14:30-15:10 Article reading ( Led by Ellen : please Blissers print out by themselves if needed , we will not provide hardcopy in the meeting )

15:10- 16:10 Guided question discussion : (Led by Steven )

Guided Questions
1. What is sexuality?

2. How is “sexuality” different to gender?

3. What is gender performativity?

4. Is there such a phrase as “born this way?

16:10-17:30 More Discussion : (Led by Steven )

“It” is costly, divisive and already causing harm to our community. The rights of any group of Australians being subject to a public vote sends a terrible message to our community.

This past year, we have seen numerous so-called referendum taking place, from Brexit, the US election, German election, so on and so forth. Some ended up in complete populism while others remain to unfold. In your opinion, what is the definition of democracy? Is it realistic to permit every citizen to cast his/her sacred vote?

Something to think about:
Do you think same sex marriage legalization is necessary?
In the contemporary society, is marriage the ultimate stage on one's relationship?
Are identities fundamental in terms of granting a legal status?

Hi, Blissers,

Miller _2017 Oct.jpg

Attendees: Miller (Host), Winnie, Joe, Ellen and Laura (New comer)

Meeting photo link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/mmCIjF80vT0ibEae2

Here’s the quick recap and we enclosed the PDF file of his meeting materials. Shall you have any question , please feel free to raise it up and discuss with us when you join our future Bliss meeting 😊

After a quick self-introduction, Miller starting his meeting by introduces different types of risk while doing investment and he emphasized that doing risk management is the same thing as doing investment management (while some people may think they are 2 different things).

1.      Types of Risk :

O   Market Risk: Loss caused by price decline in our asset

O   Credit Risk: Loss caused by counterparty default in interest or principle payment ( e.g. Bond and Loan )

O   Liquidity Risk:

    (1) Loss caused by us liquid the asset in bad price

    (2) Loss caused by extra funding cost when we don’t have

    Enough money to finish settlement

O   Operational Risk: Loss caused by operational missing like

  Fat-finger, Hacker attack…etc.

O Legal risk: Loss caused by violate the law governance like

KYC is exercise not solid, money laundering.

2.      How to identify the risk :

You need to know the essence of the investment/trade

Including: Purpose/Target of this trade,

         Structure of this deal,

         The current market,

         The future market forecast,

         Counterparty’s credit

3.      Risk measurement tools :

Miller then introduce different risk measurement tools for different types of risks, it’s quite technical and need some mathematic formula to accomplish , but under Miller’s explanation , we all got a preliminary understanding of those tools . For details, you may refer to enclosed PDF file.

4.      Case Study (2007 Crisis):

This is the most interesting part of meeting , while Miller introduced the famous cases happening during the 2007 economic crisis with above mentioned different types of risks of investment and shared with us the lesson learned and solutions for how to prevent the same case happening on the investment  .

What impressed us most is about the subprime mortgage loan credit crisis, we not only understand the whole story about this famous event, and also surprised to understand that how investment banks can pack “lots of garbage grade financial products into a tasty cake” (please refer to PDF file p39-p41), and why those garbage can be repacked to tasty cakes for investors? The answers lie in via diversifying their pool of mortgage loans, and also support by the US government. This case really taught us a lesson that not only in our life, but also in investment, we really need to invest with cautions while the position looks “too good to be true “and never play unless we knowing what we’re playing.

5.      Case Study (Our own)

In the end , we discussed our failure experience on investment , and Miller also summarized and reminded us of the risk management as following 4 conclusion , and emphasized that the key to survive is to control our liquidity risk while doing the investment .

Market risk: high frequency

Credit risk: High loss amount

Operation risk: high frequency

Liquidity risk: Key of survive

Reflections:

We had a very informative meeting hosted by Miller, a risk management and control manager in the financing field more than 10 years. It definitely brings us some new ideas of investment risk management and also, it helps us a lot to review our curren and future investment after attending Miller’s meeting. In all,

we all thank Miller with his dedication and resourceful meeting with us in such rain pouring day …!! Let’s hope to have his Serial 2 meeting on investment and related subject soon in 2018 😊

New York Times Sporting Review:
1. NFL make 12 Billion USD Revenue per year (Highest among all of sport leagues on the earth), much higher than NBA (USD6 billion), and MLB (USD9.4 billion) beyond our stereotyped imagination.
2. NFL owned most –watched TV programs viewers.

2. Saturday night for College Games (NCAA)
3. Sunday night for Professional Games (NFL)

Fun in Watching NFL:

1. Unpredictable, during the game, yard-gaining between two sides are the most breathtaking moments because you just can’t predict when or which team will win at the last minute.
2. Superbowl half-time Show, considered a splendid show in America, the superstars like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Michael Jackson once performed in the show.
3. Some Football Player made celebrating dance soon after touchdown.
4. In daily conversation, NFL becomes a welcomed topic to avoid religion or politics forbidden ones.
5. NFL Tickets are regarded as status and richness symbols due to its astonishing price and rarity. Sometimes you are not able to get the ticket even you are rich enough. Because it is so POPULAR.

Rules of American Football

It is a game for all shapes and sizes that requires both mental and physical skills.

1. American football is being played on a 100-yard field by two teams of 11 players at the same time, totally 53 players in each side divided into squads of offensive, defensive and special team units.
2. The aim of the game is to move the ball into the opponent’s endzone to get a touchdown (6 points).
3. Extra point can be achieved by Quarterback passing the ball to Receiver in the air
or by running back rush to move the ball forward.
4. In every four plays (downs), the offense must move the ball 10 yards forward to keep possession of the ball and earn another four (downs) in order to drive down to the opponent’s endzone.
5. If the defense prevent that making 10 yards. The offense team must punt the ball to give possession to the opponent or if close enough to endzone they would kick the ball into the gate (3 points).
6. After playing four 15-minute quarters, the team at most points wins the game.

Carmelo successfully passed forward his NFL passions to us by giving us the supporting data for the popularity of NFL, how to enjoy watching NFL by video clips, showing us NFL-related tutorial lesson for beginners, and some play-used in the NFL. In addition, Jeff, a sports expert in the meeting, also helped us to understand more. We really had a fruitful meeting ever.
