Dear Blissers,

Impacted by the COVID-19, many companies allow their employees to telecommute occasionally or otherwise participate in flexible work plans. Accordingly, privacy consideration” for “individuals or cooperates” becomes more valued.  This coming Saturday on July 25, 2020, our informative hi-tech Host, Kurt, will share the related concern and solution! Welcome to join us!

Here is Kurt’s introduction:

Dear Blissers,

How are you? It has been a while and hope you all are doing well!!

Privacy consideration and legal compliance of facial recognition in the artificial intelligence era. Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions. The term may also be applied to any machine that exhibits traits associated with a human mind such as learning and problem-solving.

Pattern reorganization, especially used in the surveillance system, is one of the most well-known AI applications developed in the recently years. Undoubtedly, safety and security are the major advantages of the application to uncover criminals or to find missing children and/or seniors.

However, the protection of an individual's privacy and the prevention of legal abuse are always the major concerns. On 25th of July, we are going to have a deep knowledge on this popular technology and discuss the pros and cons about the application.

Agenda:

14:30 – 14:40 Warm up and self-introduction
14:40 – 15:00 Experience sharing on face recognition

15:00 – 15:20 Introduction on the face recognition technique

15:20 – 15:30 Break

15:30 – 16:00 Surveillance society overview

16:00 – 16:30 Discussion on the public surveillance

16:30 – 17:00 Personal Data Privacy and Protection in a Surveillance Era

Guided questions:

1. Do you have any experience in using Apple Face ID or Android Face unlock? Do you have any concern on facial recognition technology now nowadays?

2. Have you ever installed the surveillance system in your home and what is the purpose? If not, will you like to install such system at your home?

3. What’s your motivation to have a surveillance system? Do you agree the installation of public surveillance system?

Dear Blissers,

For the recent outbreak of COVID-19, hopefully we not only learn a lot of lessons from firsthand experience but also try to look back on the historical measures in face of infectious decease from our prestigious Blisser, Uncle Ting this Saturday on July 11, 2020!

For self-growth and in-depth discussion, please read the attachments before the meeting. Welcome and Enjoy with us!

Here is the introduction by Uncle Ting,

I assume that you are now enjoying the Dragon Boat Festival holiday. There are many traditions such as eating zongzi(棕子)racing dragon boat, drinking midday water(午時水) and realgar wine(雄黄酒) , and hanging calamus and mugwort at door.

Do you know the reasons of those traditions?

Ok, on 11th of July, we will gather together to discuss "the History of Quarantine", and things related to epidemic and pandemic. Of course, Dragon Boat Festival traditions will also be discussed.

In addition, Black Death was the most fatal pandemic recorded in human history. Many plague columns were erected in European cities with great life lost. Those columns have become popular tourist attractions now. That will be our topic too.

Agenda:

1) Warm-up

2) Epidemic and Pandemic in human history

3) The History of Quarantine and Isolation

4) Chinese folk religion/ festivals and relationships with    epidemic

5) Some famous plague columns in Europe

Guided Questions:

1) Name any infectious disease you know.

2) What do you know about quarantine and Isolation?

3) Do you know 艋舺青山寺? If not, please pay a visit or google it to find its historical relation with the epidemic.

4) Have you ever visited plague column in Europe? If yes, please bring some pictures and stories to share with us.

Host: Antonio

Attendees: Peter, Mike, Uncle Ting, Eric, Annie, Ellen, Antonio

Meeting photo link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/MYnvvGxf3QKZCT1E9

Meeting started…

Our informative host, Antonio proceeded the meeting comprehensively and fluently as before. First in warm-up session, we had a sharing about how COVID-19 affected us and we found some new behaviors formed during “Anti-COVID-19 period” as follows:

  1. Personal Hygienic habits such as wearing masks and washing hands become daily routines
  2. In fear of cluster infection, enterprises develop “staggered working hours”, “video conferencing” or “conferencing call”; people keep social distancing; it also triggers emerging “Delivery Industry”.
  3. People come into consensus that “personal defense of “COVID-19” for the sake of others in the world due to “Global village” makes any impacts world-wise.
  4. Taiwan Government Staff showed herself as most successful Anti COVID-19  model in the world, and thus boomed up Taiwanese national identity then!

Antonio’s summary for the meeting:

Although we had a clear ppt presentation and thorough discussion, our devoted host, Antonio made a summary for us to have better understanding and review. We appreciate so much for his support and consideration!

What is neuroplasticity?

1. The brain can change throughout our life; it is shaped and adaptable

2. The billions of neural paths light up when you think/feel/do something

3. By building and strengthening new paths and weakening old paths is the way to make nervous plasticity

4. Four types of neuroplasticity, known as

a. homologous area adaption

b. compensatory masquerade

c. cross-modal reassignment

d. map expansion

The pros and cons

1.Listening to Mozart music for at least 10-15 minutes showed significantly increased spatial reasoning skills

2.Neuroplasticity can aid brain recovery after the damage produced by events like

stroke or traumatic injury.

3.Avoidance causes anxiety to spiral out of control, and we can rewire the neural

pathways to feel safe and secure

4.Learning a second language increases the density of grey matter in the left inferior parietal cortex and that the degree of structural reorganization in this region is modulated by the proficiency attained and the age at acquisition.

5.Compared with bus drivers, taxi drivers had greater gray matter volume in

mid-posterior hippocampi and less volume in anterior hippocampi.

The neuroplasticity and the aging

1.Older people learned a visual task just as well as younger. However, white matter is changed in older people, while gray matter in younger.

2.Dancing induces significant increase in gray matter volume in the left precentral gyrus. Volume increases in the parahippocampal region were observed in the dancers

3.Challenging leisure activities activate core cognitive processes may prove to be more effective than computer-based training. Besides, the effect of cognitive training is durable over time, but relatively limited to transfer to other cognitive domains.

Professional Suggestion on “Delay Aging Process”

  1. Engaged in some activities enjoyable for certain time of the day such as 20’ walk, dancing, gardening or “Bliss meetings”.
  2. The activities feature attainable, sustainable and durable from easy to hard.

Attendees’ feedback:

  1. Thank you, Antonio. From today’s meeting, I learned that “grey matter” mostly exist in “cell body” and in surface place of the brain which obviously are fresh in “young people” while “white matter” in deeper place and dendrites connected with “Synapses” which “life experiences” can activate more in “older people”. I also learned how 4 activities in neurons act in our brains which are “neurogenesis”, “new synapses, strengthened synapse, and weakened synapses. The research becomes significant to me because old people can learn well through “Synapses” connected with life experiences. We, young or old, can form new habits via “strengthened “new synapses” and drop our “bad habits” via the weakened “old synapses”.

  1. I would like also share this important slide with you ,which I notice in myself after turning age of 40 , I started to have a NEW capability ,which is making connection of everything back to myself of what I heard, saw , and experienced I often wondering why and discuss this with several of Bliss good friends , and now it makes everything so clear to me after Antonio's explanation of this slide Our brain will generate more neurons and new synapses while we learn new skill and keep practicing repetitively ,then our brain will change , the process called " Neuroplasticity ". In conclusion, try to " give feedbacks" as more as possible toward every person/everything that touches you, inspires you and guess what, it will not only change your brain gradually but also the counter person's 🤗🤗

Reflections:

It is a resourceful -ever meeting in Bliss history! From the “brain study” perspective, Antonio took us into the mysterious sphere under the scalp, the cognitive part of learning process. No wonder, all the attendees asks Antonio for more information after the meeting. We look forward to his knowledgeable meeting soon next time. Stay Tune.

Meeting started…

Our informative host, Patrick, started the meeting punctually and proceeded as interesting and attendees-friendly way as before!

Sharing Session: The most impressive (car) accident in your life
In this session, Host Patrick recalled us of the * accidents* occurring in the past. After the sharing session, he deliberately linked the following session to indicate how auto-pilot can help in this regard.

How hi-tech helps solve the daily or foreseeable traffic problems

Secondly, he informed us with video clips about how the tech research can help solve the traffic jam or human driving failures.

Auto-pilot Evolvement from Level 0-Level 5

Followingly, he came up with the evolvement with different specification and d description:

Level 0, driven by horse
Level 1, basic auto brake, ex. Toyota.
Level 2, Partial driving automation, ex. Tesla.
Level 3, (conditional Driving automation, with little human intervention
Level 3 "eye-off" 2D system control with human intervention
Level 4 "mind off" with the help of automation

Level 5 full automation without human control, can we say it is autonomous? Ex. Robotic taxi.

 Debates: Pros and Cons

1. Do you agree at the world without human intervention?
2. If the driver chooses auto driving AI should be fully responsible for injuries or any casualties?

Pros: Yes .it help avoid human errors and the responsibility should lay on the AI, of course!
Cons:

Even in autonomous state, it is the designers who face " moral decision” because they are the ones for numerous AI. The decision-making will only fall on some, a kind of “oligarchy”.  As Most of people are so dependent on AI, they also lose their “Free Will”, the most precious part of human beings!

. For private automation, too many cars make waste of the time, resource, deepening the rich-poor gap and hackers ' concern.

Host’s Feedback

Hosting the meeting is always not unilateral lecturing & forwarding, but interactively nurtured by everyone's illuminating feedbacks.

Appreciate for everyone's participation reinvigorating our minds of thinking. Sometimes we do need to pull ourselves out of the minds immersed in long murky working weeks.

Attendees’ Feedback

How knowledgeable Patrick has been at the weekend gathering!  Ha-ha, I escaped our area speech contest and sneaked in to Bliss’ meeting.  It was worth it.

Patrick, as a high tech or auto savvy, has demonstrated his insight and foresight for future market about Autonomous steering.  Although the future is unknown, we could invent, create and foresee picturing how a Utopia-like” country will be born.  Am I day dreaming!  Well if there is a mission statement established, we can make it.  I have truly immersed myself into Pat’s presentation, though I was late. I think Pat has a style that he made the meetup fun and entertaining yet imaginable.

Thanks to Pat for his awesome sharing. If it is measurable, a ‘A plus’ is presenting to Patrick.

Thanks to Patrick‘s fascinating sharing of autonomous driving technology. Through the discussions of our driving experience, Patrick guided us to learn how AI could assist us to have safer and smarter driving. We also learned the different levels of self-driving and actual applications in the current car market. By watching the videos of self-driving cars, it visualized our future life with all the benefits brought by these cutting-edge technologies (ex. self-driving delivery, Robo taxi..etc.).
Although I still have concern for a world controlled by AI, I do appreciate all the brilliant ideas and creativity driven by self-driving technology and look forward to more advantages provided by future technology. Imagine if self-driving cars were ubiquitous now, it surely could help us to mitigate infection of CONVID 19. Restaurants should have no worries to deliver lunch boxes to hospitals. No drivers would be infected COVID 19 during transportation. Thank you for this informative and provocative meeting. You also demonstrated a successful meeting with a vivid atmosphere and perfect time management. I enjoyed this meeting and learned a lot. Thanks again.

Reflection-

Once-a-year meeting hosted by Patrick always empowers us with useful information and knowledge. Besides its advantages of the auto-pilot, the meeting also highlighted its defects and moral thinking along! We appreciate Patrick and all the attendees for in-depth discussion from which the meeting broadens our horizons and offers us with a wonderful guidance to steer the ways to either automated or autonomous driving!

My Dear Blissers,

Do you miss the humor and fluency in Patrick’s meeting? Here is his introduction for the coming meeting on Mar. 7, 2020:

Are you still obsessed with the streamlined and fascinating Tesla car? Actually, the new auto-pilot and self-driving technology is far more than a fancy, streamlined look, as well as the dazzling control panel in the car. Believe it or not, the future of a more advanced technology of unmanned vehicles is just around the corner within 5~7 years.

Thanks to the lightning speed 5G technology, as well as the fast-moving ingenious AI development, all those cutting-edged technologies are brought up to make all “impossibles” possible in the unmanned technology.

Now that Taiwanese companies are embracing this golden age to incorporate with the most advanced autonomous car corps in our time, we are having the luck to witness the next revolution of transportation that is happening now.

Agenda:

14:30 ~ 15:00: warm-up instruction and share about the autonomous car.
- Share your transportation experience — what is the most unforgettable car accident?
- what do you think the best benefit of the incoming of world for transportation driven by autonomous vehicles? and, what is the negative side?
- if one day you are no longer allowed to drive your car, but must controlled by AI or computer for safety concern, what will you think?

15:00 ~ 16:00: the instruction of the coming future for autonomous car (technology, unicorn start-up companies, and the world trend)

16:00 ~ 16:10: short break

16: 10~ 16:50: debate about the autonomous driving

16:50 ~ 17:30: discussion about Taiwan's fruitful opportunities for the era of burgeoning autonomous car

My Dear Blissers,

People say “True Communication” exists when there is no gap between two counterparts to say and write what they mean and mean what they say and write!

It seems mystic and hard to get across. However, our strategic expert, Eric is going to unveil the mystery and guide us in a fun way. Come and join us this coming Saturday on Feb. 22, 2020!

Ears up to his introduction here:

Hi, Blissers~~

My college is known for engineering.  Most of my college friends are engineers.  Our college once surveyed the employers in our community for feedback and suggestion on what our students need to improve.

Out of all the responses from the local employers, the one thing on the top of the list is “communication”.

Communication skill is often the key to an employee’s performance within a company, whether writing an email to a supervisor, talking to a coworker or making a phone call to a customer; it is important that an employee poses good communication skills.

Just about everyone needs to be a good writer and a good speaker.  If you want to perform better at work, sell more products or be a better husband, you need communication skills.

This is a valuable Bliss meeting, it’ll be fun and interactive.

I invite you to have fun with us on February 22nd, Saturday.

Date: Sep. 28, 2019

Karl started with “Loving” Hearts

Karl, a senior and devoted Scout, has been filled with “patriotic” passion for Taiwan and “Parental concern” for cultivating “Elites” in our youth. With such intention, he has been reaching out his “Strong Big Hand” to search more “International platforms” in which offer Taiwan more spotlight. Then excitingly, he found out PROC isn’t a member before he went and Taiwan is and where Taiwan can hold up our national flag. Here he started the planning, organizing, registering, training, and on his expediton~24th World Scout Jamboree.

.

Warm-up Section

Karl asked Blissers to share their bucket list such as traveling, going on extreme sport like climbing the Mount Everest, upstream, bungee jumping, interacting with animals like Kenyan prairie, adventure in Amazon and so on. After that, Karl started his as follows:

24th world Scout Jamboree

Host countries: USA, Canada and Mexico

Theme: Unlock a New World (aiming for a better world)

Executive Director: Marty Walsh

Location: The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve totaling over 14000 acres, a unit of national park in West Virginia in USA.

Period: July 21 to August 2, 2019

Highlights: Inspiring speeches by the former UN-Secretary, Ban Ki-Moon and Secretary General of WQOSA, Ahmed Alhendawi; Bear Grylls’ getting down the stage from the high; Performance by Pentatonix and light Balance; breathtaking firework and laser show!

Next Jamboree Host Country in 2023: Korea

Outdoor Activities: rock climbing,

Attendees: adults (over 18) and participants (under 18)

Wonderful Design: Sustainable Tree House by USA

What Taiwan Scouts did in the Jamboree?

1.      Troup Leaders arrived 3 days earlier to set up Contingent booth and greeted the youth on July 2, 2019.

2.      After arriving, more scout members join the DIY building their own camps, one of the impressive one is Germany.

3.      Then the contingent team members need to take shifts in charge of Booth matters but they still have plenty of time to go around talking, visiting, swapping badges or attending exciting outdoor activities.

How they promoted Taiwan inside and outside the booth?

1.      Set up our “Taiwan Contingent Booth”,

Based on “the most localization is the best internalization”, Karl chose Taiwanese “Puppet Show” the setting of which is “Journey to the West”, and the figures of which are Monkey, Pig, Monk, and Sea monster. The distinctive figures attracted visitors to the booth!

2.      Writing Visitors’ foreign names in “Calligraphy” on their arms

3.      “Sharp” Questions: How to distinguish “PROC” and “Taiwan?

Though Taiwan has been recognized as only a political entity not a country in the world, the people there enjoy the freedom of criticizing President without being set into prison while the people in PROC never do!

4.      “Question 2: can you tell us what is special of “Taiwan” besides political freedom?”

--Taiwan owns 268 mountains over 3,000 meters in 35,883 sq. km you can swim in the beach and climb up to 3000- meter High Mountain within 4 hours! Comparing with Japan, New Zealand and UK, Taiwan owns the most spectacular topography!

5. Cooperate and work with other countries by attending “Adventure Programs”, by which build up friendship and enhance “Taiwan Exposure”.

Why Taiwan Scouts Joined the Jamboree?

With the most reasonable expenditure, Karl hopes to lead the young scouts to experience international cultures, interact with the elites from every corner of the world, learn how to introduce Taiwan and reinforce their own national identity!

Attendees’ feedback

(1)   Bon Voyage! ’W доброго пути’!    Wow gorgeous West Virginia like a God’s country, 1. heavenly amazingwhere equality, hope and faith, and trust n love truly count. Joyfully we landed on the Jamboree camping ground.  Are we dreaming?  No, but actually Karl did take us down there.  I bet you would get a kick out of it, even if you were not there today.

There were no hustle and bustle down the road but sights and sounds and peace& serenity played an indescribable melody cheering on us.  Beautiful scouts, colorful color scheme on all nations’ f flag, self-assisting state of mind, all pulled together, certainly have offered a new pattern of upbringing for the young ones.

Until the words “Elite” punched out by Karl, the attendees immediately were sparked jumping into cross cultural discussion.  Russian rep, French peer and locals talked over it with various thoughts.

Last but not least, taking part in the world-known Jamboree seems becoming actionable to be written in our bucket list.

I personally have enjoyed your presentation where the heritage, tradition and enchanted beauty of West Virginia n Boy Scout promises, via your realy inspiring sharing, have indeed enlightened our thoughts. Thanks a lot. Keep it up. It’s really a good job.

(2)

Thank you for your sharing, this is my first time to know more about World scout Jamboree, after the introduction about it. I hope one day, I can let my kids to join (if I had), but lucky I have nephews, than I share to their parents about what I heard from the meeting.  I like its spirit -everyone is equal and have chances to embrace the different from each other and from service to others, we are not learning a lot but also gain a lot.  I also see the love and warm heart from those people, if it can starts from younger that will be super good! :)

Host’s feedback:

Thank you for coming to my meeting in the heavy rain yesterday. The 24th World Scout Jamboree is like a dream in the heaven. But after all, I should go back to reality. I choose what the most rewarding part to share with you is. There are several members who are interested in the daily life of Jamboree also. Unfortunately, limited to time, it can’t be detailed. Sorry for that. I am willing to explain this part in private time with interested partners. The real world is always not perfect, hope we can guide more young mans with positive events to inspire them to overcome more difficulties.

Reflections:

Karl’s meeting brought us new horizons to Jamboree and also made us reflect on our own lives and duties pondering what we can do for Taiwan and for youth! During the meeting, we discussed the guided questions and viewed the magnificent video clips of Jamboree’s memorable moments! We really thank Karl for his wonderful sharing and attendees for valuable feedback to the questions. All in all, this meeting is meritorious-ever in Bliss. We all look forward to his next meeting soon! Stay Tune!
