Hi Blissers,

The host, Owen, brought us a fabulous auction meeting. The first section of meeting was about the introducing of auction companies, such as Sotheby's and Christie's. He also let us know the origin of auction and the types of auction, for example, English auction, Vickrey auction and so on. Not only to speak up for bidding which is English auction but also to put the desired amount on the paper, then the person with the highest amount won the bid and paid for the second highest amount, which is Vickrey auction.

After getting the idea of auction, the second section was to participate the auction. The blissers introduced the things they brought made them interesting to bid. The owner could choose the auction type. Some chose English one and some chose Vickrey. The meeting was exiting, especially few people wanted one thing.
Although the limitation of time, some people could not hold the auction, everyone had lots of fun to join the process. Thanks for Owen to host and the blissers offered the great things for bidding. More photos can be found in the below link.

Participants: Owen, Jessica, Daniel, Serina, Judith, Sabrina, Stanley, Selina, Ashow, Patrick, Sanli, Cara, Angela

Hi Blissers,

Coming after the meeting by Ellen, "What money can't buy", Judith introduced another book, "Justice", by the writer Michael J. Sandel. Judith led us to think further about "Justice". In the beginning of the meeting, Judith made us to talk about the opinion of justice. Although everyone has his own opinion, many things are not so justice basically because we are used to the situations in the society. People may seek for the benefits on the most people but to damage or sacrifice the benefits on the less people.

The writer, Michael J. Sanel brought up a question in the class.
If you were driving a train, you were facing a forked rail. There were 5 persons working on one rail, and there was only one person on another rail. If you did not change your route, the train would hit the five persons. Will you choose the rail with one person or keep moving? It sounds like to hit one person or five persons. We may encounter this kind of questions in our daily life. Everyone has his own choice. However, most of people may choose for the biggest benefit. If you view this situation in the different way, even have the same result, everyone may have different decision. So, what is the definition of justice?

Addition to the discussion, Judith showed a video about the class of  Michael J Sandel in Havard university and it made us like in the classroom to have this lesson. Judith also reminded us whatever situation you face, please remember the real purpose. It will help you to make the decision closer to justice through the understanding of the ultimate goal.

Topic: Justice

Hi ! Dear all,

Living in the society, everyday we'll meet different people from different places. Most of them are all Taiwanese. However, even growing up in the same country, with the same culture background, it's still often to find that we have different values from the others.

This Saturday, I would like to take this advantage to introduce you a very famous book " Justice ", written by Michael J. Sandel, to let all participants have a relaxed discussion about what is JUSTICE ?

We'll have different case studies and also to think from different point of view (such as from Utilitarianism, Libertarianism, markets ...). You'll find it's interesting that sometimes it's not so easy to judge what's the right thing to do ?!

Welcome to join us ! To have a brainstorm with us !

See you,
Judith

Hi Blissers,

It was so great to see Iris and she share a book, The One-Life Solution; the author, clinical psychologist Dr. Henry Cloud. She made us to think more about ourselves and the inner thinking. By some words, they reflected what we were feeling and expressions, which we did not notice by ourselves. This lesson also taught us to apply these words in our daily life and the relationship with others surrounding us. In the end, she helped us to review our time management and the work priority. The helpful hints are very useful. Thank you, Iris!

The host, Nick, introduced us how to learn English by the cartoon "Spongebob" last Saturday. From the statistically, many high level managers who work under the high pressure environments like to watch Spongebob, also for many normal office workers. Spongebob provided the interesting story to make us relaxing and we could learn some slang language. Nick prepared and provided us a very good opportunity to learn and he also showed us a part of cartoon for training our listening and writing. Nick explained the skills of vocabulary and grammar both on oral and writing ways. He demonstrated many accents, like British, Indian..., and it was very funny. Thank you, Nick!

Hi Blissers,

The host, Ellen, shared a meaningful book" What money can't buy" on 5/18 meeting. The writer is the famous professor of Harvard University, Michael J. Sandel. He teaches a course "Justice" at Harvard University and it has become one of the most popular courses since 1980. We discussed our surroundings corresponding to this book. More and more things in this current society are viewed as merchandised product and less and less morality. Money could not use to evaluate things, but it can now. You could donate the money and gain the permission to school. We also can see the ticket scalping for the train ticket and concerts; or you could pay more to the hospital for better caring and surgery. However, do you agree with these things? We had a debate to agree or disagree. During this meeting, we were inspired about the self awareness and society justice. Thank you, Ellen!

Attandance: Ellen, Selina, Naishin, Annie, Wisely, Karl, Kurt, Daniel, Vicky, Ann, Barkley, Serina, Jessica, Judith, Stanley, Archer, Kevin Huang

TOPIC: Learning Experiences

Dear Blissers,

For the 1st, You don't know how to cook and really want to have a try. I will share you my experience in cooking. Hope you can cook someday.
For the 2nd and 3rd, Do you ever feel confused by English words that seem very similar?

Some common mistakes we might know but we did them often. For example in this short conversation, there are few mistakes in it. Could you find it out

A: Do you exercise when you're sick?
B: Yes, I usually do. Even if I'm feeling sick, I'll go outside and run.
It usually makes me feel better. How about you.
A: How to say that? Well, when I'm sick, I like to rest. But I'm feeling fine today.
B: Well, then let's go get some exercise!
A: OK. Let's go for a bike ride an hour later.
B: Sure! See you later.

Would you like to learn some idioms and popular English phrases so your English will sound more natural? I also share some for you guys.

Have a good day,
Kevin

Note 1: Please read through and print out the attached article before joining the meeting on 5/18 .
Note 2: The virtue of “Punctuality is what money can’t buy” , show your respect to the host and other Blissers who do need your attendance on time!

Agenda:

Dear Blissers,

Should we pay children to read books or to get good grades? Should we allow corporations to pay for the right to pollute the atmosphere? Is it ethical to pay people to test risky new drugs or to donate their organs? What about hiring mercenaries to fight our wars? Auctioning admission to elite universities? Selling citizenship to immigrants willing to pay?

Let’s take on one of the biggest ethical questions of our time: Is there something wrong with a world in which everything is for sale? If so, how can we prevent market values from reaching into spheres of life where they don't belong? What are the moral limits of markets?

In recent decades, market values have crowded out nonmarket norms in almost every aspect of life - medicine, education, government, law, art, sports, even family life and personal relations. Without noticing and realizing it, Is this where we want to be ???

I’m going to share with you a book What Money Can't Buy, Michael J. Sandel , whose "Justice" course is one of the most popular and influential at Harvard University since 1980.

Reading this book really an eye & mind opening experience for me, everything you thought up to a point becomes questions, challenges !!

And this coming Sat. afternoon on 5/18 , I would like to engage all of the dear Blissers to into a discussion of some big questions in our lives , our societies …..I cannot promise a definitive answer after the meeting discussion however, hoping via my meeting to provide a chance to each citizen of Taiwan to think them trough .

Here is several questions which we are going to discuss some of them before /during and after our article reading , please bring us your input when joining my meeting this Sat afternoon

1.     Is there anything in the world that we definitely should not pay to buy ??

2.     Except what we read from the article , why we shall worry if everything in our life is up for sale ? please give your own openions.

3.     Do you agree students to use market mechanism to allocate access to any lead university? ( e.g huge donations to the school )

4.     Our military service from 徵兵 to 募兵制 , do you agree or disagree with it , why  ?

5.     Do you agree with ticket scalping with below 3 diff scenario

5.1           Ticket scalping for the May Day concert

5.2           Ticket scalping for the train ticket during the Chinese New Year vacation

5.3           Ticket scalping for the priority to have a medical care , e.g Surgery .

6.     Your observation & opinions toward below 3 diff cases

6.1           Convenient Store v.s tradition grocery stores

6.2           Train book stores v.s  small independent book store

6.3           Media merging ( newspaper and TV channels ) –e.g 旺中寬頻公司併購案

7.     What is the whole purpose / meaning of our discussion on What Money cannot buy today in the article and in today meeting ?

He also showed us the video and photos of Baroque buildings in Taiwan and explained the construction and details of building. During some compared photos, all of us missed the buildings in old times. .............................................................................................................................................................................

Hi Blissers,

Guess where this building is from? It's not from Europe or Russia, or Middle ease, but right in our living place - Taiwan.

You may not know there are hundreds of exotic buildings like this one throughout the island.

This week I am going to reveal the soul and spirits of antique architecture in Taiwan. There are only a few people who really can appreciate the beauty and grandeur of buildings in old times. No, it's not they are blind or in lack of artist taste, but they can not easily discover the treasure, pearl concealed in some unbeaten corners.

2:00 ~ 2:30: warm up activities - share the impression of special landmarks in Taiwan.
2:30 ~ 3: 30: Introduction of exotic buildings with location & history in Taiwan
3:30 ~ 3:40: 10 min break
3:40 ~ 4:45: presentation of reviving Tokyo Rail station - How to make all old things live agin in modern world? Where is the Renaissance in Taiwan's architecture?

4:45 ~ 5:00: 15 min break
5:00 ~ 5:30: guessing game on nowadays location vs old times construction.

Thanks,
Patrick

Hi Blissers,

The host of Kevin Cheng advises us how to apply the university in the USA last week. It was very useful and he also brought his application to share with everyone.  Additional to the language , there are more criteria. Although you can have the agent to help for application, the main point is still to prepare the sufficient documents by yourself then you can submit the application.

More than the TOEFL scores (must achieve the required score), the application also requires for transcript of University-Chinese & English version, working experience or not, GMAT result...etc( the details as attached from Kevin).

Later, Kevin made us into 4 groups and practiced the faculty interviews. It is like the professors of University to interview you. He also taught us how to answer properly. This skill can be used not only for applying university but also hunting the jobs. It is very useful. In the end, we also chose the best team and awarded the gifts. Thanks for Kevin to offer a wonderful afternoon.
